Kimbolton School Science and Maths faculty

The project provided a new science and maths block on the site of a demolished building and included the conversion and refurbishment of an adjoining building.

The teaching spaces were arranged in a plan form which was splayed on each side of a central breakout space. This central space was enlivened by the staggered plan and top light from rooflights, which also gave natural ventilation. Four science classes for each discipline at 90m2 each were arranged either side of large central prep. rooms, with five maths classrooms completing the block.

The faculty sat alongside and was linked to another recently completed building, the architecture of which was replicated in the new design, including vertical oak solar shading. This ensured that Planning permission was achieved in the setting of the Grade 1 Listed Castle.

Low energy was a key concern and is achieved through natural ventilation, solar shading to relevant facades and a heavyweight exposed structure.

We were appointed at Stage 3, to deliver the Planning approved scheme within budget.
