Berkhamsted school

Improvements to a historic Independent school enabled the school to offer equal facilities for girls to those previously enjoyed by boys. New accommodation includes 7 classrooms, 2 Science Labs, Food Technology Facility and support rooms, grouped around a new Refectory/Dining hall. This new block connects into the existing building group, giving improved disabled access and enclosing a new collegiate courtyard.

The proposals include an ocular 21st century Chapel suspended in space above the 3 storey atrium, and appearing on the exterior elevations. The building design featured brickwork detailed in both traditional loadbearing pattern and as isolated cladding panels, all of which related to the context on the edge of the town’s conservation area.
