The existing campus requires significant rationalisation. We concentrated new buildings and redevelopment in the centre of the site, to create a pedestrianised network of streets and squares.
At the centre of the site is a new Hub building, containing social spaces at ground level, moving up through learning resources to main theatres/ performance spaces at roof level.
Leading to this new structure is a high level bridge structure, which reaches from the existing main entrance over a courtyard to a new Hub building. The modern inhabited bridge reflects the University’s success in fashion design –it is a catwalk, containing display and retail cases.
The catwalk enters the new Hub building between two raked auditoria, providing a spectacular venue for end-of –year shows. The courtyard, over which the catwalk spans, will be stripped of later additions and re-paved to provide a quad, with access at many levels around the perimeter. The lowest level of the Hub building flows into this quad, unifying the whole campus.
The catwalk and hub are wrapped in coloured copper ribbons, which extend into the landscaping.
